Get a claw-like grip on trail running in Altra’s Lone Peak 5

While not as light as its faster sibling, Altra’s Superior, the flexible Lone Peak is agile on rocky surfaces and provides reliable traction – it shares the Superior’s grippy MacTrac outsole with angled TrailClaw lugs – on muddy trails. With its fifth release, the shoe has received an overhaul of updates, including a new Ego midsole, which was previously double-layered EVA. This switch is a boon for runners who want more cushioning without the additional weight. “The midsole offers many happy miles of running on technical trails,” said one tester, “but it’s not overly cushioned where it adds unnecessary volume, making the shoe heavy or clunky underfoot.” Branded Shoes

Claw-like traction

The spaced chevron lugs on the rubber outsole were a defining feature among our testers, especially those who ventured out onto muddy trails of rain and melted snow. “The Lone Peak is a capable, well-rounded trail shoe for everything you throw at it,” said one. “I had the opportunity to run on fast, smooth trails, technical rocky terrain, mud and snow, and he handled it all with ease.” Shoes And Sneakers

Find that locked fit

The new laser-perforated holes in the toe and sides improve the upper, promoting greater breathability, ideal for longer stretches on the trails. The only drawback we found with the Lone Peak: getting the right lacing for a good heel lock. Testers described the initial fit as sloppy and required a bit of “messing with the laces” to get a secure grip. As I worked uphill, quickly shifting my feet to beat the steep climb, I found that my heel kept sliding sideways on the footbed. Best Sneakers

Foot shaped toebox

Where you want some space: the toebox. The Altra’s distinctive foot shape provides ample room for toe spread, which came in handy as I maneuvered around rocks and boulders of icy snow. And when nature’s obstacles were unavoidable, the StoneGuard rock slab in the forefoot protected my foot from sharp stones and gnarled roots. Kacamata Rayban
