The Puma Speed 500 V2 adds cushioning to your final kick

The RW Takeaway: a high-rebound midsole and a locked upper make the Speed 500 a shoe that feels fast, without saving on cushioning.

The softer heel foam combined with a midsole plate provides a quick, yet cushioned ride
The new upper looks more breathable and has a comfortable fit
The loop connects to a strap in the middle of the foot for greater security in the arch of the foot

The Speed 500 of the second year is a completely different shoe than your first year. While the midsole and sole remain unchanged, the upper has been completely overhauled. The sock collar and delicate laces are gone in favor of a lighter traditional style thanks to a new breathable mesh. (The first version used eyelets perforated in a fabric that really allowed to personalize the lace, but the corset shape was a bit tedious.) Thin, flat laces now look more standardized, but incorporate a secure loop. Midfoot strap that can tighten the shoe a little more for better locking in faster steps and greater stability. Our testers, who admitted that they liked the tights a little when they picked up the pace, loved the new band that hugged their feet, although some found that it could be a little protruding. Heel attackers noted that the landing was a little slow due to the soft, almost spongy padding of the rear foot, but the triangle-shaped propulsion plate kept the transition from the forefoot fast to a vigorous takeoff. And while the damping level falls right in the middle of the Puma spectrum (500 indicates precisely the midpoint on a 1000 scale), it offers a much higher than average energy return, according to our laboratory data.

“My initial thought was that these shoes are better for sprint and running training,” said an appraiser. “But I was also pleasantly surprised by the invisible level of damping in the almost 16km races.” Best Sneakers

A midsole with kick and cushioning

The Speed midsole and the new upper work together to make this version look much faster than its predecessor. The novelty in v2 is a light handle in the middle of the foot that connects through the lanyard, so when you press the shoe, you immediately feel the strap fit just below the arch. I have never felt more stuck and secure in a shoe, and this is essential to feeling fast; a sloppy or slippery attack will delay most of us. But this band also functions as a seat belt, attaching the foot to a plastic propulsion plate in the middle of the foot. The design provides additional support at high speeds, while channeling a more responsive energy return into the toe box. (Our lab data shows that it works; the energy return from the midsole falls into the higher category.) It makes for a harder ride, but the plush heel and moderately soft forefoot keep it from looking too hard. So, although Speed v2 will undoubtedly shine for the best times on easy miles, there is enough cushioning underfoot and support for a lightweight internal heel, to help you with some daily runs as well.

Soft and light rubber

Like Speed 500 original, the v2 has a sole that reaches an ideal point between weight and durability. Puma uses three separate pieces of soft rubber, instead of a single whole piece, so it doesn’t look too heavy on the sole that the shoe gets heavy, but it doesn’t wear out too quickly either. Its slightly sticky grip gave our testers exceptional traction by increasing the pace on wet and dry roads. Shoes And Sneakers

“These cougars have a good, soft and rubbery grip on the road that is similar to Brooks glycerin (which I thought could never be beat!),” Said a tester. “It was not a difficult and slippery connection to the road, but it was a pleasant and confident feeling with each step and step.”
