Most brands would protect a bestseller shoe by not changing it much, but Brooks has rolled dice here and fundamentally updated this durable stability shoe. Gone are the middle posts that have existed since 2003, which have been replaced by less aggressive guide rails that run outside the upper material. You won’t encounter them if you run efficiently, but if your foot rolls in or out, they come into play to bring your foot back to a neutral position.
According to Kacamata Rayban, this was supposed to work for everyone, but strong overpronators found that they weren’t getting the support they needed. Elsewhere, the midsole foam has been modified to achieve a stiffer, more springy ride (our lab rated it one of the best tests for energy return) and a longer lifespan. This is still an excellent shoe, but if you’re a fan, try before buying to make sure the changed ride suits your needs.

Heel / Toe Drop: 11.5 mm (M), 11 mm (B)

The Swiss brand On does not list every update of its shoes and sneakers, which can make it difficult to determine whether you are looking at the current model or not. Version five is available in blue or green for men and dark red or teal for women. This is a shoe that should offer something for everyone – an everyday training model for faster runners and a racing day shoe for the more leisurely types.
The first four iterations did an excellent job, but with that something has changed. It’s heavier, so Speedsters didn’t enjoy it that much, and despite the extra midsole foam, this didn’t result in an extra jump. Slower runners reported a firmer ride than they wanted, and the RW lab reported that it was performing poorly on heel padding, forefoot padding, and energy return. It’s still responsive, reliable, tight-fitting and breathable – but best suited for even runs of medium length.
