A term that has become very common among people these days as they are used for sports shoes as if sneakers and sports shoes were the same. People refer to all kinds of shoes with rubber soles as sneakers even though it is not right. The reason these shoes got their name was because the sneakers made very little noise while walking due to their rubber soles. It is also possible to sneak up to someone else while wearing these and hence the name, sneakers. And, sneaker is a term used mainly in North America, while in England and Australia, the term for similar shoes is called joggers and trainers.
